Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Chapters across the country will host nationwide an America’s Sunday Supper in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy. The Durham Graduate Chapter has chosen to dedicate their Sunday Supper to Women Veteran’s and their families.

If you are a veteran woman, we invite you and your family to come and enjoy a delicious meal, provided by Johnny Carino’s, and a display of decedent desserts. We will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King through inspirational dialogue, recognition of women who chose to dedicate their lives to service and celebration of community. We look forward to seeing you there.

Prepped for Success: Getting To and Through College

Has your high-school senior completed his/her college applications?

Do you know what types of financial aid are available for college?

Does your student know what he/she wants to major in?

Do you know what the most competitive majors are?

 

This workshop for high-school students and parents present the key steps to the college admissions process and what to accomplish at each grade level to prepare  for this important process. Topics discussed include financial aid, selecting classes, identifying potential majors and careers of interest, standardized tests, extracurricular activities, and how to maximize resources such as the Internet, mentors, counselors, and community organizations.  The workshop will also present the various opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) that students can pursue in college, and how to begin preparing for these now.

Seminar I: Maintaining and Keeping Your Home October 27, 2011 – this seminar will focus on learning how to build a strong financial foundation for homeownership. You will receive tips on how to balance your budget, develop a savings plan and increase your financial stability with a focus on preserving homeownership.

Seminar II: You Received a Foreclosure Notice… What Do You Do Next?
November 15,2011 – this seminar will include information on strong loan modification negotiation techniques. It will also teach you to tell if you are a victim of foreclosure paperwork fraud or loan violations. We will discuss effective legal defenses as well as learn of government foreclosure prevention programs and the phases of foreclosure.

These members were Mafjorie Shepard, Frances Eagleson, Bernice W. Jones, Jean Holtzclaw, Bryd Jackson, Beatrice Qualls Burnette, Aida Fortune and Gladys Powell. Vivian Mason, South Atlantic Regional Director established the chapter which remained a part of the South Atlantic Regional until 1953. Alpha Zeta Omega then became a part of the newly created Mid-Atlantic Region under the leadership of Rose Butler Browne, the first Mid-Atlantic Regional Director and a long time member of the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter. Alpha Zeta Omega was the first Greek-letter Sorority in the City of Durham as well as the third Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha to be established in the State of North Carolina.
